Staffordshire Pottery Flat Back
Description
Staffordshire figures were originally crafted as decorative ornaments designed to brighten up the home, often placed on mantlepieces. While their primary purpose was aesthetic, some pieces also served practical functions, such as spill vases, pastille burners, and watch holders.
Today, these figures are highly sought after by collectors, with a broad international appeal that extends well beyond Britain.
Given their age, many Staffordshire figures show signs of wear, including paint loss, crazing, firing cracks, and chips. Produced primarily between 1740 and 1960, these earthenware figures were later reproduced, particularly in China, where high-quality copies of the rarer originals were made, often making it difficult to distinguish the reproductions from the originals.
I’ve made an effort to provide an honest assessment of the condition of each piece in my descriptions, to assist potential buyers in making an informed decision.
For example, this Staffordshire Pottery Flat Back features a joyful family, standing at 12×20 cm. While there is some paint loss, there are no signs of damage or repairs, and it remains in good condition considering its age.
